Victorian Dining Tables

Extending Mahogany Victorian Table

Nothing beats the style and formal elegance of a Victorian style dining table. They are an enduring design classic and for good reason - they can really elevate a whole room giving it a quality high end look. They certainly impress at dinner parties and their solid and chunky design makes them very comfortable to sit at. Typically Victorian tables will have two D ends and stand on chunky hand turned feet. The tables are very solid and sturdy, making them perfect to handle the vigours of daily family life.

One of the great things about these tables is how they work of a leaf system (please read a guide to the leaf system here ) - you can add or take away extra sections to the table to seat more people if required. Also with Victorian tables, the extending mechanism typically works via a pulley at one end of the table that you rotate to wind the central metal rod. As the table opens out you can drop in the extra leaves. This is great as you can extend the table to it's largest configuration for those larger dinner parties. We have tables that go up to sixteen feet and can seat 14-18 people if required. We can go bigger if required, just let us know your requirements. They also make great tables for board rooms. We have even custom made tables to put into various Embassies and corporate HQs in London. Of course come and view them in our Hertfordshire antiques showroom.

Most Victorian dining tables are in mahogany - the sumptuous patina and colour to mahogany really gives them a sumptuous quality. We do have various Victorian tables in walnut if required so please let us know if this is what you are looking for.

Of course we specialise in providing full dining sets to our clients - so we can source chairs to perfectly match your table. The classic chair would be the Victorian balloon back chair to match the table if you want that authentic Victorian look. We also have a whole host of other chairs - Chippendale, Queen Anne, Regency, William IV, Hepplewhite - so just let us know your requirements and we can source the perfect chair. Many of these sets are on display in our Hertforshire antiques showroom so you can drop in and see how they look in person - nothing beats sitting around the table to try it out for size and comfort.

Extend (or retract) via the leaf system

Regency Dining Tables

Canonbury Antiques specialise in classic English antique dining furniture - and one of our favourite pieces has to be the Regency style pedestal dining table. As with all furniture from the Regency period - which is heavily influenced by classical architecture and design - the design ethos is clean and refined, making them perfect for contemporary interiors. Regency tables work on a pedestal system - hence the name. Each section of table with legs stands on the pedestal base - extra leaves can be added (or subtracted) normally by an easy to use slat system.

Large Regency Dining Table

( Large Regency Dining Table )

The extra leaves are dropped into the table so it can extend to suit bigger occasions. These make them great for large upscale dinner parties where you need to accommodate upwards of 16 people. We carry various Regency pedestal tables that are 16 feet in length. If required we can custom make them to a bigger specification, so size is as big as the imagination can take you. We have put these tables into foreign Embassies in London and at corporate HQs as they're great for big board meetings.

Regency Aesthetic

True to the Regency aesthetic - think Palladian architecture like London's Regency Street by the famous architect John Nash, or Thomas Sheraton furniture - the design lines are fluid and angular. The table tops are quite thin (as opposed to the more chunky Victorian tables) and look great in contemporary settings. Regency furniture frequently looked back to classical antiquity for design references and hence the look is clean and unfussy. I particularly like the splayed feet bases on clean fluted legs - also normally on brass castors so they are easy to move around.

Of course, if you have a large Regency pedestal table you really need some chairs to match. The classic Regency swag back chair is the perfect match for these tables and they are very comfortable to sit in. The drape - or swag - acts as the backsplat and again the swag is a popular Regency design motif. Of course various other chairs - William IV, Chippendale, Trafalgar, Queen Anne etc - also look good around these tables. Many of these sets are on display in our Canonbury Antiques Herfordshire showroom so please get in touch for an appointment. Nothing beats trying these sets out for size and comfort. The tables mainly come in either mahogany or walnut and we can find chairs to match both of these woods.
