CNY's best outdoor dining spots: top spots for eating outside
By Jacob Pucci
Dining outside is not something we Central New Yorkers can do that often, so when the weather is warm, it's best to take advantage of it.
Some of our favorite spots are along lakes and rivers, while others offer sweeping hilltop views, or simply serve as an outdoor oasis in an otherwise busy city.
These are our 17 picks, listed in alphabetical order. Is your favorite not listed? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

Alex's on the Water
Some folks only see the Oswego Harbor once a year during Harborfest, which is a shame, because it's one of the best sights in a city full of beautiful vistas. Alex's on the Water, opened in 2013 inside the Best Western Hotel, has a chic dining room, but the real treasures are found in the glass-enclosed bar or open patio.

Aurora Inn Dining Room
The Aurora Inn Dining Room, located inside the Inns of Aurora, is home to both an elegant dining room and a large back deck where diners can watch the sunset over Cayuga Lake. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, so if you want to enjoy the view, but not pay the full fine dining dinner price tag, head there early in the day.

Barado's on the Water
The sister restaurant of Barado's Cafe, home to what dining critic Jane Marmaduke Woodman said are the best Utica Greens she's eaten, Barado's on the Water offers diners a view of the scenic and tranquil Bradbury's Boatel.
The seafood-centric menu includes grilled fish tacos, crab cakes and an ever-changing list of specials. Note: The restaurant is open seasonally.

Borio's Restaurant
Borio's has been a fixture along the Oneida Lake shore for more than five decades. In addition to the usual menu of salads, steaks, seafood and Italian fare, Borio's is also one of the few places in Central New York that serves bullheads each spring.

The Brewster Inn
The Brewster Inn is a top fine dining destination and its weekly brunch is the place to be on Sunday mornings, but this top-notch view doesn't have to come with a big price tag. Visit on Mondays for a burger, fries and pint of craft beer for just $17.

1820 House
For a view of Skaneateles Lake impossible to replicate from the village proper, head to the 1820 House, located atop a hill in Borodino, about eight miles east of the lake. Ask for a table on the deck.

Elderberry Pond
Some restaurants offer views of the water, or panoramic outlooks atop high mountains, but few restaurants can boast views of its own 100-acre farm, where much of the meat and produce served in the dining room is sourced. If the weather is nice, take a seat at the quiet, tree-lined patio.

Francesca's Cucina
Standing on North Salina Street, you wouldn't be able to tell that a private garden oasis awaits at Francesca's, where some of Syracuse's best Italian food has been served for more than 20 years. Be sure to try the homemade meatballs, a dish Post-Standard dining critic Denise Owen Herrigan called a "revelation."

Heid's of Liverpool
For a quintessential bite of summer nostalgia, head to Heid's. The Liverpool institution has been serving franks and coneys, cooked on the flat-top griddle until deeply browned on both sides, for 100 years. The restaurant is open year-round, but it's best enjoyed from a seat at the picnic tables underneath the red and white pavilion.

Lakeside Vista
A seat at the deck at the Lakeside Vista offers diners a fine view of Otisco Lake. The Littleneck clams, steamed in butter and craft beer, and the burger, made with the restaurant's own blend of ground chuck, brisket and short rib, were among the standout dishes in dining critic Jared Paventi's review.

The Loft at Vesper Hills
The Loft at Vesper Hills opened in 2013 by restaurant veteran Jim Hickey, who also runs the Foggy Goggle Restaurant at Toggenburg Ski Center in Fabius. While the Foggy Goggle is only open during the winter, The Loft is definitely a summer spot (open from April to October), complete with beautiful views of the golf course and Otisco Lake.

Rainbow Shores
The coast of Lake Ontario is home to some of the finest sunsets in Central New York. At Rainbow Shores, those sunsets and lake views are paired with a fine dining menu that includes grilled steaks, seafood and pasta. Or stop by the bar for a cocktail and a burger made with prized Pat LaFrieda beef. Note: The restaurant is open seasonally.

Rudy's Lakeside Drive-In
Our NYup.com panel of judges named Rudy's the best fish fry in Upstate New York and if there's anything better than their fried haddock sandwiches (or my favorite, the fried smelts), it's the view of Lake Ontario from the many picnic tables outside this busy establishment. Just make sure the seagulls don't eat your French fries. Note: The restaurant is open seasonally.

Tom Thumb Drive In
Proof that great outdoor dining can be found at any price point, this stop along Owasco Lake is a long-time summer favorite. In case eating a Texas hot and a banana split while sitting at a picnic table overlooking the lake isn't summer enough for you, the Tom Thumb opened an 18-hole mini golf course in 2016. Note: The restaurant is open seasonally.
